On the small island of Samsø in Denmark, inhabitants have within the last 10 years managed to convert their energy consumption to become 100% CO2 neutral. The people here care deeply about the environment, which is why Samsø is the ideal place to convey knowledge about sustainability and sustainable construction; a task undertaken by Samsø Energy Academy. Every year, the academy welcomes more than 5000 architects, engineers, students and decision-makers from all over the world who come to learn about energy-efficient buildings.
The building from 2006 that houses the academy is a multifunctional low energy building that uses automated natural ventilation. The windows are located in deep niches. Air intake for the natural ventilation takes place through the bottom-hung windows at the top of the glass sections. Air removal happens via the roof rails either through windows to the south or through openings integrated in the façade to the north.
NV Advance® controls natural ventilation with different ventilation strategies for summer and winter, so the indoor climate is always adapted to comfort and CO2.
