Ramløse School is a primary school in Denmark. In relation to a retrofit if the school’s 24 rooms, the building owners wanted a space saving, energy efficient ventilation solution with an attractive construction cost, and together with WindowMaster, they found a solution the met all these requirements.
The 24 rooms consist of class rooms, crafting rooms, a canteen and a library, which are all areas are ventilated with a hybrid system (a combination of mechanical and automated natural ventilation).
The solution is space saving as the entire ventilation solution is integrated into the façade; automatic controlled windows along with small, decentral vents with heat recovery are placed at high levels to avoid draughts.
The solution is energy efficient because the mechanical vents with heat recovery are the primary ventilation source solely during the winter while automated natural ventilation is the primary source of ventilation during the summer.
The air change rate as well as the ventilation principles are based on local weather data and preferred levels of temperature and CO2 in the individual rooms.
In each room a control panel has been installed for manual override of the windows. This allows students and teachers to change the windows’ position if more or less fresh air is needed. After 30 minutes, the system switches back to automatic control mode.
Subsequent to the commissioning, the indoor climate was closely observed. The analysis showed indoor temperatures below 26°C in the summer and in the range of 20-24°C in winter, which is in accordance with DS474. The CO2 levels generally remain below 1000 ppm, which complies with the relevant Building Regulations, where peaks over 1000 ppm are allowed.
