When the Norwegian Mesterfjellet school in Larvik Municipality was designed, the developer chose a hybrid ventilation solution to ensure an optimal indoor climate with the lowest possible energy consumption.
The school was completed in the summer of 2014, where 530 students and 100 teachers were able to use the new premises. It is a two-track elementary and middle school, which also contains an after-school care center and health center.
The building has motor-controlled windows that allows specific amounts of fresh air to enter the building without creating draft. The automated natural ventilation system is used most of the year, meaning that students and teachers can enjoy the fresh air and comfortable, cool temperatures in the summer. The mechanical part of the hybrid system assists the windows in colder periods to avoid draft in especially smaller rooms, and to further exploit heat recovery.
The overall solution provides a good indoor climate and helps reduce CO2 emissions and energy consumption considerably.
