Great Britain, Aykley Heads
The new police headquarters at Aykley Heads in Durham, is a state-of-the-art facility. The building is nearly 6,000 sqm and houses more than 400 people including police officers, administrative support, response and communications centre, and a criminal justice unit.
The building is arranged on three floors around a full height central concourse, which forms a central point for all activities and is fully glazed to allow natural light as well as natural ventilation into the heart of the building.
The design responds to its parkland setting with glazing to exploit the magnificent views towards Durham Cathedral and its southern approaches.
One of the fundamental requirements was to design a building with flexibility to accommodate future changes in police strategy, which lead to a modular structure, planning grid and service integration. This was also considered when designing the ventilation for the building.
The natural ventilation is provided through automatically operated façade windows placed at high- and mid level in the facades of each office area and at an upper level in the atrium. The fresh air enters primarily through the façade windows in the open plan office areas, crosses the areas and exits through the façade windows in the atrium. It is an intelligent and cost-efficient system that allows users to work in fresh air without draught issues.
The automated natural ventilation system is controlled by WindowMaster’s NV Advance® system which interfaces with the computerized building management system (BMS), which is linked to the beams in the ceiling.
WindowMaster carried out a substantial environmental modelling analysis to ensure that a natural ventilation strategy would achieve comfortable conditions within the building and meet the strict design criteria. The analysis demonstrated that by automating windows at both high- and mid-level, the client could reduce the amount of time the mechanical ventilation would need to run by 500 hours over nearly 3 months. Based on the analyses, 678 actuators which control windows in 62 zones were incorporated in the final installation.
All in all, the quiet intelligent window automation maximizes internal comfort while reducing the overall amount of CO2 the building emits, allowing natural ventilation to deliver a fresh and healthy indoor climate.
