The new extension to Birkerød Highschool in Northern Zealand, Denmark, is a great example of how to elegantly solve ventilation challenges when a building is expanded.
The ventilation solution, which consists of hybrid ventilation in the class rooms and natural ventilation in the large atrium and corridors, has enabled a modern design with an impressive ceiling height and plenty of fresh air despite the low ceiling height in the existing, old part of the building.
This is achieved by integrating the entire ventilation system in the façade. In the classrooms automatic controlled windows along with small, decentral vents with heat recovery are placed at high levels in the façade to avoid draughts. In the large atrium, automatic windows are placed in the façade across three different levels (stack ventilation).
The air change rate as well as the ventilation principles are based on local weather data and preferred levels of temperature and CO2 in the individual rooms.
In each room a control panel has been installed for manual override of the windows. This allows students and teachers to change the windows’ position if more or less fresh air is needed. After 30 minutes, the system switches back to automatic control mode.
Besides delivering the natural ventilation solution, WindowMaster also controls the heating in all rooms. It eases the operation, when the same supplier is responsible for several features related to the indoor climate.
Søren Vedøe, Facility Manager at Birkerød Highschool, states about the new extension:
“We are very pleased with the new extension and I perceive the rooms as both fresh and comfortable. The ventilation system is simple to use, and it’s great that we can monitor the air quality and indoor climate on the touch screen and see that the rooms are actually being ventilation through the façade openings. Both the staff and the students are happy with the indoor climate and also appreciate the fact that the are able to adjust the windows on their own.”
