Ventilation principles

Natural ventilation in a building can be based on different ventilation principles. A ventilation principle illustrates how the Natural Ventilation will function based on the building shape, internal heat loads and location of openings.

Generally we operate with the following three fundamental principles:

• Single-sided ventilation
• Cross ventilation
• Stack ventilation

In practice the ventilation principle in a building is often based on these fundamental principles, which can be combined in many different ways from building to building. Examples of combinations: 

• Single-sided and cross ventilation 
• Cross and stack ventilation
