Leicester Gateway College is a £24 million development to relocate Gateway College in central Leicester to new purpose-built facilities on a 12-acre site in Hamilton, to the north of the city. The move has increased capacity at the sixth form college to 1,500 students, 250 more places than previously available.
Opened in August 2009, the new building is highly sustainable and the design incorporates a natural ventilation system from WindowMaster, an on site biomass boiler, rainwater harvesting system and wind turbines, with low energy lighting and under floor heating throughout the college. Externally, the college features render panels and curtain walling to its façade, with VELFAC composite timber/aluminium windows and a standing seam metal roof.
The natural ventilation system will control the indoor climate in both the classrooms and the central street area and a weather station mounted outside the building monitors external conditions, including wind direction and speed, temperature and rain fall.
